Student Assistant
Georgia Institute of Technology: Director of Development II, College of Design
In 1908, Georgia Tech taught its first course in Architecture. Later in that year, a curriculum was created and organized. The first degree from the Department of Architecture was granted in 1911. After World War II, the School of Architecture was created. In the next decades, three additional programs were created – Industrial Design in 1940, City Planning in 1952, and Building Construction in 1958. In 1975, the College of Architecture was formed to house all four programs, and a doctoral program in Architecture was established in 1982. The Department of Music became the fifth academic discipline in the College of Architecture in 1991. By 2010, all five of the disciplines were growing and all of the programs were reorganized into five schools. With this sustained growth, and in an effort to reflect the commonality of the five disciplines, the College took a bold step and was renamed the College of Design.
Today, 115 years later, the College of Design is a multi-disciplinary college comprised of architects, planners, engineers, computer scientists, composers, musicians, social scientists, and design professionals who focus on design and innovation at the intersection of the arts, social sciences, and technology. The College emphasizes design, creativity, and critical analysis in all disciplines. We educate students to address the complexities and challenges of the 21st century. Our faculty and students develop new technologies and products; design, plan, and build sustainable cities and state of the art buildings; and embrace new modes of creation and artistic expression to solve global issues and enhance human well-being. The College emphasizes human-centered design in all disciplines and at all scales--from handheld digital products to smart buildings to urban cities and regions. The College’s research addresses today's most pressing human and built environment issues, including climate change, social equity, environmental degradation, accessibility, affordable housing, and health. The College is comprised of over 100 faculty and includes scholar-teachers and professors of practice who bring both academic and practical expertise to the classroom.
